Ensuring the accuracy of environmental information
Global warming presents one of the greatest challenges for mankind in the 21st century.
The international response to climate change started with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1992. Five years later, 159 countries signed the Kyoto Protocol to the Convention, which commits the industrialised countries to reduce greenhouses gas (GHG) emissions by 5% compared to 1990 levels, by 2008-2012.
The target may seem small but it is regarded as one of the first steps by humankind to:
- Limit climate change and global warming
- Reduce usage of fossil fuels and encourage renewable energy
- Encourage sustainable developement.
The Kyoto Protocol established 3 'flexible mechanisms' to enable achievement of the targets:
- Emissions Trading
- Clean Development Mechanism
- Joint Implementation
