“The Green Deal will be the biggest home improvement programme since the Second World War shifting our dated draughty homes from the past into the future, so it’s vital people can trust it” Greg Barker – Climate Change Minister.
The Green Deal is a major initiative by the UK Government to cut carbon emissions and improve the energy performance of domestic and commercial buildings. The Energy Bill introduced in December 2010 included provisions for the initiative. The aim of the scheme is to improve the energy performance of buildings, whether domestic or commercial, by retrofitting energy efficient products. Property owners will not pay any up front costs, but pay for these improvements through their energy bills over the lifetime of the products. The funding is being financed through the Green Deal Bank and the liability for the debt lies with the property and not the individual.
The Green Deal is expected to be launched in October 2012 and the Government has stated that they want a robust and certifiable way of ensuring that consumers get the correct advice and the products actually reduce energy bills.
The scheme will comprise Green Deal Providers, Green Deal Assessors, Green Deal Installers and Green Deal Products.
BSI has been involved in the development of the PAS for Green Deal Installers and has been selected as a participant in the pilot scheme for UKAS accreditation for Green Deal Certification Bodies.
