Lexcel is the Law Society’s practice management quality mark.
Developed by the Law Society, Lexcel allows any type and size of practice working to the practice management standards to gain recognition for doing so through independent assessment.
The Lexcel standard allows legal professionals to demonstrate that they are looking to provide exceptional customer service; it allows practices and legal departments alike to distinguish their service offering from that of the competition.
Registered Lexcel practices benefit from improved customer satisfaction and can also reap the benefits of reduced liability insurances borne out of demonstrable risk management practices.
Independent BSI validation of your practice or legal department delivers a number of benefits including:
- Improved customer service through improved service delivery
- Improved marketability through a recognized quality mark
- Consistency in operation across practices and locations
- Identification of opportunities for improvement
- Continual improvement
In order to be awarded a certificate of registration to the Lexcel, the Lexcel office needs to be sure that you meet the criteria contained within the standard that is relevant to your operation.
There are a number of key steps to implementing the Lexcel standard:
Assemble team and agree your strategy
Your strategy should be prepared, agreed and endorsed by senior management.
Develop your management system and supporting documentation
Detail any processes and procedures; these should be kept to a minimum for efficiency and effectiveness. This information can be included on your self-assessment questionnaire for future reference.
Implement your system
The key to implementation is communication and training. During this phase you should be checking that the processes and procedures fit your business and that everyone operates to them. This should be validated to demonstrate you are doing what you say you are doing.
Consider pre-assessment
Pre-assessment will allow you to identify areas where you may not be operating in accordance with the requirements of the standard. This phase will also allow you to make any necessary changes before initial assessment.
Assessment
At this point BSI will review your system and determine whether you should be recommended for registration. This information is then supplied to Lexcel who will make the final decision.
Continual assessment
Once you have received registration and been awarded your certificate, you can begin to advertise your success and promote your business. To maintain your registration, you will need to continue to use your management system. This will be annually checked by BSI to ensure it continues to meet the requirement of the standard.
