ISO 9001:2008
Changes from 2000 Version and Certification Transition Requirements
A new version of ISO 9001 (ISO 9001:2008), the world's most widely used quality management system standard, was published on November 14th 2008 and is now available in the UK.
The purpose of ISO 9001 is to provide the requirements for a quality management system (QMS), which is a framework for an organisation to control its processes in order to achieve objectives including customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance and continual improvement
The new version is a result of the standard ISO process that reviews standards every five years. In this case it is five years since the end of the transition period for the previous change, 2003.
ISO 9001:2008 introduces clarifications to the requirements existing in ISO 9001:2000, based on user experience over the last eight years, and changes that are intended to improve further compatibility with the ISO 14001:2004 standard for environmental management systems.
The changes to the standard are only minor and our belief is that it should not cause clients any major changes to their systems. Please see the box below for answers to questions that you may have about your existing certification.

ISO 9001:2008 FAQ's
| Questions |
Answers |
| When will the standard be published? |
It was published on 14th November 2008 |
| Where can I purchase copies of the amended standard? |
The standard can be purchased at the following link: www.bsigroup.co.uk/new9001standard where BSI Management Systems is offering a temporary discount to clients of 10% on the list price |
| Will BSI Management Systems be providing training for clients on the changes? |
BSI Learning is delivering a workshop focussing on the enhanced benefits that can be gained from a management system based upon ISO 9001:2008. The changes to the standard will be explained and discussed during the workshop www.bsigroup.co.uk/costorasset and participants will be given a free copy of the standard |
| How will BSI Management Systems deal with our clients through the transition from the 2000 to the 2008 version of the standard? |
The transition period for this update will be just over 1 year. All clients must be compliant with the new standard by 31st December 2009. This will be carried out through continuing assessment visits as it is thought that the changes can be adequately covered on this type of visit. |
| When will my visit be undertaken? |
From the date of publication Client Managers will be able to undertake the assessment against ISO 9001:2008 at any of your existing continuing assessment visits (CAV). This should be agreed prior to the visit with your Client Manager. There is no requirement to do this at the first visit but it must be completed by 31st December 2009 |
| When will certificates with the new standard date be issued? |
For certificates that have an expiry date in 2009 the new certificate will be issued after your re-certification audit (strategic review visit and not before). Where your certificate expiry date is beyond 2009 it will be re-issued at the first CAV where the Client Manager has used the 2008 standard but the certificate expiry date will remain the same. |
| Will my Certificate expiry date change? |
No, your certificate expiry date will remain the same as before since the changes to the standard do not effect your certification cycle. The re-certification (strategic review) assessment will be done as scheduled in the existing three year cycle. |
| When can BSI Management Systems start to assess to the new version of the standard? |
From publication but formally 1st January 2009. |
| Are there any other opportunities that an organisation can take with the introduction of the new standard? |
There are a few:
- Organisations might like to introduce the 8 management principles as a way of moving ISO 9001 into the board room. The following gives up to date information on the management principles: www.iso.org/iso/qmp
- For ISO 9001 to work effectively it should be introduced into the whole organisation. Have you thought about doing this?
- Are the processes that you have interactive? You should be aiming at having one management system.
- The standard now makes a small but significant reference to 'Risk'. This is seen as being a major step forward and something that you should concentrate on as having ISO 9001 systems in place helps to 'control' your management systems to ensure that you meet customers' requirements.
|
| What happens if I don't make it by 31st December 2009? |
Your existing certificate is valid for 24 months from the date ISO 9001:2008 is published at which point it will expire (13th November 2010). BSI will agree with you an action plan to specifically address this and to avoid this situation happening. |
