Product testing can form part of the product certification process or it can stand alone as an independent process. BSI tests a very wide range of products from lifts to fighter pilot’s helmets. Some of these tests may contribute to the issue of a certification mark whilst other testing is done to assess a product’s performance and design.
BSI has the expertise and resources to devise and implement a testing regime that will meet virtually any international, European or British standard as well as manufacturer’s own specifications.
Our testing capabilities
Our testing capabilities are amongst the most highly-rated in the world and in the UK BSI has one of the largest United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) approvals. BSI is also a Notified Body for 17 of the New Approach EU Directives. This means that we are appointed by the UK Government to inspect, test and certify products that fall under the scope of these various Directives.
Through our testing facilities we can assist with design reviews, prototype or pre-production testing to simplify the compliance process.
BSI can identify technical requirements, product testing and certification schemes for most countries in the world. If we aren't already part of a certification scheme, we'll investigate joining it to help you.
We have reciprocal agreements to accept our test reports with many countries including; Japan, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, EU member states, China and Russia.
In the UK, we perform testing for a variety of government departments, regulatory bodies and trade associations, such as number plate testing for the Department for Transport (DfT) and cables testing for the British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC).
